Rufous-backed Shrike

The Rufous-backed Shrike or the Long-tailed Shrike is found widely distributed across Gujarat and there are variations in plumage across the range. The Rufous-backed Shrike or the Long-tailed Shrike is well distinguished from other Shrikes by the bright, contrast colour and the long tail. They often impale their meals on thorns and so the Shrikes are also known as “butcher birds” because of their feeding habit. This bird has a characteristic upright “shrike” attitude when perched on a bush, from which it glides down to catch its prey.
